Should I Convert My Hot Water Cylinder to an Infinity System?

A Rinnai Infinity System recently installed in Wellington

If you're a Wellington homeowner looking to upgrade your hot water system, you’ve probably heard about Infinity hot water systems or instantaneous hot water systems. They’re popping up in homes across the region - and for good reason. These continuous flow systems are efficient, compact, and offer a seemingly endless supply of hot water. But should you ditch your trusty old cylinder and make the switch? Here’s everything you need to know - and how you can make it happen.

What is an Infinity hot water system?

A Rinnai Infinity system is a brand of continuous flow / instantaneous hot water system. They heat water on demand - so instead of storing hot water in a tank like a traditional cylinder, an Infinity heats the water as you use it. That means no running out of hot water mid-shower - and when you live somewhere like Welly that gets chilly in the winter - you know you want to keep the water running nice and toasty.

The system kicks into gear when you turn on the tap and shuts off when you turn it off. It’s an energy-efficient way to get exactly what you need, when you need it. Unlike electric hot water cylinders, they use natural or LPG gas.

Why are Infinity systems so popular in New Zealand?

It’s no surprise Infinity systems are a favourite in Kiwi homes, especially here in Wellington. Our homes are often compact, and older cylinders can take up precious space. With an Infinity, you free up that hot water cupboard - more room for linen, storage, or whatever you fancy.

Plus, with rising power costs, many homeowners are keen to reduce energy bills. Infinity systems only heat water when it’s needed, meaning less energy waste compared to systems that keep a full tank hot all day.

What’s involved in switching to an Infinity?

Converting from a hot water cylinder to an Infinity system isn’t just a plug-and-play job, but it’s nothing to be scared of either. Here’s what’s usually involved:

  • Assessment of your current setup: We’ll check your home’s plumbing and gas lines (or see if gas can be brought in).

  • Installing the Infinity system: Usually mounted on an exterior wall, so we’ll find a good, accessible spot. We recommend keeping them away from bedrooms as they can make a little bit of noise (not much - but at 2am, everything sounds loud!)

  • Removing the old cylinder: Freeing up space inside your home.

  • Adjusting pipework: Ensuring your new system connects cleanly and runs efficiently.

  • Compliance and certification: We’ll handle all the legal stuff, including gas certification and safety checks.

How much does an Infinity cost?

Every home’s a little different, so exact prices can vary - your best bet is to get in touch for a quote. But as a general guide:

  • Infinity system install: Typically ranges between $3,500–$5,500+, depending on the complexity of the job and any gas line work required. This is a ballpark cost, and might be more or less depending on your home and the work required.

  • Gas connection (if not already installed): Additional costs apply if we’re running a new gas line to your property.

While it’s a decent upfront investment, many homeowners find they make it back over time through lower energy bills and a more efficient system. And nothing really beats a shower staying hot, rather than turning to ice half-way through.

The pros and cons of switching to an Infinity

Pros:

  • Endless hot water - no waiting for a cylinder to reheat

  • Energy-efficient and cost-effective over time

  • Frees up storage space in the home

  • Lower risk of leaks or bursts from a stored tank

  • Sleek, compact units that stay out of sight

Cons:

  • Requires gas (bottled or mains) - not ideal for homes without gas access

  • Upfront cost can be higher than replacing an old cylinder
